Who knew how many words there were to describe all the ways my eyelashes could be perfect? Or that a car could stimulate my adrenal glands in such a variety of ways? Fascinated by the vast vocabularies that are deployed in marketing, I started collecting lists of words associated with specific consumer products. Reading down those lists evoked a strange feeling – the words out of context in some ways seemed diminished yet still managed to convey a very specific set of aspirations and values. Inspired by the peculiar magic of these words I devised an online game for people to create short stories, in which the marketing words and phrases could be used to generate a personalised mood and meaning.
